C19th Tourist Photographs of Italy & Japan
About
An exhibition exploring the theme of nineteenth century tourism photography from Italy and Japan.

In the 1880s the idea of leisure took hold, and if you were an aristocrat you embarked on a year-long grand tour to see the cradle of civilisation - Italy. On display are works by Giorgio Sommer, Alfred Noack, Giacomo Brogi and others.

A decade later and the grand tour could be to anywhere and photography kept up, with Japan an ultimate adventure to somewhere exotic. This exhibition features many prints from the prolific Kimbei Kusakabe.
